What Is Cosmetic SurgeryCosmetic surgery is a dimension of the broader plastic surgery sector, which means the moulding of the surface and deep structures of the human body. The term plastic surgery includes reconstructive surgery; perhaps after being badly burned in an accident, as well as procedures for aesthetic enhancement of the body.
Cosmetic surgery deals with the second type of surgery, and is an elective procedure mainly used to improve a person’s appearance. However, some procedures falling into the cosmetic surgery group are undertaken for medical reasons, such as a breast reduction to improve orthopedic problems. Within the realms of cosmetic surgery there are many different procedures, including cosmetic laser surgery, liposuction, facelifts, and breast enlargements.
In the UK, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons is the main trade association for the industry although other plastic and cosmetic surgery associations do exist. Over the past few years, BAAPS has been at the forefront of development of new techniques that are now used by plastic surgeons in the UK and across the world.
The association also strives to advance education in plastic and cosmetic surgery for public benefit, establish links with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, ensure that cosmetic surgery remains a recognised and respected discipline, and to promote a better understanding of cosmetic surgery among GPs.
